Haarer, Waneta J. Mast
November 21, 1940 - September 29, 2023
Waneta J. Haarer, 82, of Goshen, passed away peacefully at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 29, [2023] while surrounded by her family at her home. She was born on November 21, 1940, in Kokomo, to Gerald and Lola (Slabaugh) Mast. On August 25, 1962, in Howard-Miami Mennonite Church in Kokomo, she married Donald "Don" Haarer, he survives.
Survivors in addition to her husband are their three children, Douglas (Kristi) Haarer of Middlebury, Denise Ann (Terry) Knepp of Millersburg, Daryl (Crystal) Haarer of Middlebury; seven grandchildren, Kody (Nadine) Haarer, Kortney (Wesley) Busby, Ashlyn (Trevor) Godshall, Landon (Jessica) Knepp, Hope Haarer, Silas Haarer, and Luke Haarer; brother, Weldon (Linda) Mast of Kokomo; two brothers-in-law, Clifford Frey and Jerry Golden both of Goshen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; twin sister, Wanda Frey, sister, Joyce Golden. Waneta was a homemaker, worked for Penguin Point, and was a cook for Walnut Hill Daycare. She was a former member of Forks Mennonite Church and Clinton Brick Mennonite Church and most recently attended Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church. She was a proud grandmother and deeply loved each of her grandchildren. She was a devoted friend who attended weekly Tuesday breakfast for over 35 years with her church friends. Don and Waneta enjoyed camping, hosting family and friends, and attending southern gospel concerts. She loved cross stitching, reading, word search puzzles, canning, cooking, and meeting/visiting with new friends, making sure that nobody was a stranger to her.
Visitation will be from 1:00 - 4:00 and 5:00 - 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 5 at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home: 1003 S. Main Street Middlebury. Family and friends will gather at 8:45 am on Friday, October 6 at the funeral home to go in procession to Bontrager Cemetery, Middlebury, for a 9:30 am graveside service. A celebration of life service will follow at 11:00 am on Friday, October 6 at Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church, 61115 IN-15, Goshen. Services will be conducted by Pastor Craig Garber.
Hanshew, Danny L.
April 4, 1945 - July 5, 2023
Danny L. Hanshew, 78 of Goshen, died Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born April 4, 1945 in Goshen to Lawrence and Ruth (Chrispyn) Hanshew. They preceded him in death.
He married Grace Pence July 3, 1993 in Shipshewana. She died April 14, 2022.
Survivors include a daughter, Ronda Fisel, and a son, Bradley Hanshew, both of Goshen; two grandchildren, Mason and Chance; and three siblings, Rose Hanshew Martin of Shipshewana, Richard Hanshew of Syracuse, and Kenneth (Ruby) Hanshew of Decatur, Illinois.
Mr. Hanshew served in the Air Force and worked in the iron foundry industry at Daltons in Warsaw for 10 years.
Danny enjoyed being with people and playing games. He attended Maple City Chapel.
Visitation will be Friday, July 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, followed by a 7 p.m. funeral service. Pastor Gary Miller, Maple City Chapel will officiate.
Cremation will take place following the service.

Harter, Wayne
November 19, 1932 - November 8, 2023
Wayne Harter, age 90 of Wakarusa, died at 3:00 pm, Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Hubbard Hill Estates of natural causes. He was born November 19, 1932 in Wakarusa to Earl and Bertha Weldy Harter. He married Helen Pletcher June 1, 1951. She preceded him in death December 11, 1954, leaving 2 daughters who survive, Coleen (Doug) Steele, Wakarusa and Wanda (Kenneth) Heckathorn, Nappanee.
His 2nd marriage was to Barbara Detweiler August 25, 1955 whom survives as well as a son, James (Tina) Harter, Wakarusa. All 3 children are living within 3 miles of the family farm. There are 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren who also survive.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Miriam Nunemaker, Violet Schrock, and Letha Nafziger Swanson.
He moved to his parents in 1941 to their farm on CR 3 in Wakarusa. This became his home for the rest of his life. This farm was settled by his great great grandfather, Jacob and Margaret (Holdeman) Freed who moved from Ohio in 1849 and built the original buildings. Jacob became an ordained Pastor at Holdeman Mennonite Church in 1951. Wayne began farming through 4-H projects in the 1940’s. He was a lifetime farmer operating a dairy farm until retirement. Wayne was awarded The Outstanding Young Farmer Award by the Goshen Jaycees in 1955. The family was awarded The Elkhart County Farm Family of the year in 1975. After his retirement, Wayne spent 8 years managing The Food Pantry at Church Community Service in Elkhart. Mr. Harter was baptized in the Holdeman Mennonite Church in Wakarusa at the age of 12. He began teaching Sunday School as a teenager and continued until age 80. He graduated from Wakarusa High School in 1950 and took two short farm courses from Purdue University. He spent 20 years as a 4-H leader and worked with Boys Clubs in Elkhart. He served on Marketing Boards for dairy organizations for many years along with local and state associations for Ayshire Breeders Association. In the early 1970’s, he joined Gideons International and remained active until death. He had the opportunity to speak on behalf of the Gideons in many surrounding community churches over fifty times. Wayne’s hobbies were collecting farm tractors from the 1950’s. He enjoyed history, passing out God’s Word, reading and the opportunity to go on Mission trips to Russia and Ukraine with Josh McDoll Ministries. He traveled to Israel, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, and most of the states. Probably the most memorable trip was taking 17 members of his family on a cruise to the Caribbean. Wayne’s family feels blessed throughout their life with many opportunities made possible by him.
Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m., Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Wakarusa, followed by a 11 a.m. funeral service also at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Olive East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Nappanee Camp of Gideons International.
Headings, Blane Alan
Nov. 22, 2006 - Aug. 16, 2023
Blane Alan Headings, beloved son of Tony and Carol (Hostetler) Headings of Buffalo, MO, was born on November 22, 2006 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He passed away on August 16, 2023 at the Children's Hospital in St. Louis, MO at the age of 16 years, 8 months and 25 days.
Blane was born with serious heart defects and had numerous surgeries. He had a heart transplant in 2014 and following a lengthy recovery he had some good years. Then after struggling with heath issues throughout his life, and especially in the last several years, he was relieved from his pain and suffering when God called him home.
He accepted Christ as his Saviour, and was baptized at the age of 14, at the Pleasant View Amish Mennonite Church, remaining faithful unto his death.
He will be greatly missed by his sorrowing parents, 4 sisters and 1 brother; Ashley 14, Kayci 12, Terrell 9, Raelee 6, and Rianna 1; paternal grandparents Jonathan and Margaret Headings, Buffalo, MO; maternal grandmother Wanda Hostetler, Halfway, MO; and great grandparents, Edward Headings, Creston, Iowa; and Wilma Hostetler, Sedalia, MO. His uncles, aunts and cousins will all miss him, too.
Preceding him in death are 2 infant brothers, Darion and Wyatt; paternal grandfather Vernon Hostetler; aunt Janel Eigsti; great grandparents, Sadie Headings; Owen and Lily Kropf; Ben and Ruth Hostetler; and Willie Hostetler.
Blane loved fishing and bird watching, flying his RC plane and many other hobbies. Talking with his uncles and many friends was very much a bright spot in his life. Our four day vacation at the White River, just the weekend before his last hospital stay, made priceless memories.
A special thank you to all the doctors and nurses at St. Louis Children's Hospital, for the expert care you've given to Blane. Your love and patience was obvious. You were such a big part of his life.
He was always concerned that he did what was right, and had a concern for his fellow youth. Although we weep, we grieve not as those who have no hope, looking forward to a glad reunion in heaven.
A beautiful sunset settled over St. Louis Children's Hospital. It marked 1555 days of Blane's life he spent there seeking better health. He had an unmatched love for aviation and took his flight beyond that sunset! Never returning for needles, IVs, or medication.

Headings, Larry E.
March 14, 1945 - September 6, 2023
Larry E. Headings, 78, of Muscoda, WI passed away September 6, 2023, from complications of Sarcomatoid Cancer.
He was born in Eugene, OR, on March 14, 1945, to Roy and Elsie Headings. On November 25, 1965, he married Miriam Kauffman. This union was blessed with seven children.
He accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized in his youth. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Valley Amish- Mennonite Church.
Larry moved to Wisconsin in 1963. He worked for E-Z Trail Manufacturing in Muscoda for approximately 20 years, He owned and operated Pequea Machine in Boscobel for over 30 years.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Miriam, seven children: Monica, husband Leonard Headings of Lorimor, IA, Lucinda, husband Dennis Headings of Lorimor, IA, Charlotte, husband Vernon Kempf of Sedalia, MO, Troy, wife Ellen of Muscoda, Kristal, husband Marlin Zimmerman of Muscoda, Richard, wife Pauline of Muscoda, Lisa, husband Morris Zimmerman of Muscoda; 44 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, brother Charles, wife Betty Headings of Muscoda.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers Richard, Vernon, Robert, grandson, stillborn grandson.

Heisey, Martin B.
August 20, 1941 - October 20, 2023
Martin B. Heisey, 82, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 20, 2023. Born in Manheim, he was the son of the late Clarence W. and Elizabeth K. (Bowman) Heisey. In his earlier years, he was employed by George Hurst at Oregon Dairy Farm. In his retirement years, he was a resident at Sunny Crest Personal Care Home, Morgantown.
Surviving is a sister, Mildred B. Nevil of Willow Street and three brothers, Irvin B. of Manheim, Glenn B. of Lititz and Luther B. of Jonestown. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mark B., Luke B., and Edwin B. Heisey.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Martin's Funeral Service at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. Helmuth, Clara M.

Clara M. Helmuth, age 88, formerly of Bremen, IN, died at 8 am on Monday, March 6, 2023 at Hope Springs Manor, Goshen, IN. Clara was born in Bremen, IN on April 22, 1934 to Moses and Minnie (Hochstetler) Helmuth. She lived in the Bremen area most of her life and was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
Surviving is a sister, Esther (Ed) Stutzman of Nappanee and many nieces and nephews.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents; 3 sisters: Mary Chaplin, Katherine Helmuth, and Barbara Helmuth; 6 brothers: Walter, Levi, William, Henry, Edwin, and Eli Helmuth; 2 nieces: Clara Miller and Lucy Helmuth; and 2 nephews: Joseph and Everett Helmuth.
Visitation will be held from 1-8 pm on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at the Dennis Hochstetler Building (2735 Birch Road, Bremen, IN). A funeral service will be held at 9:30 am on Thursday, March 9, 2023, also at the Dennis Hochstetler Building, with Home Ministries of the Old Order Amish Church officiating. Helmuth, Orie A.
June 28, 1939 to December 24, 2023
Orie A. Helmuth, 84, of Statesville, North Carolina, formerly of Arthur, Illinois passed away on December 24, 2023 at his home.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, January 5, 2024 at the Otto Center in Arthur, IL. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at the Otto Center. Rev. Duane Kuhns will officiate. Burial will be in the Otto Cemetery in rural Arthur, IL. The Edwards Funeral Home is assisting with local arrangements.
Orie was born on June 28, 1939, he lived a full life of 84 years, 5 months, 26 days. He was the son of Albert J. and Anna B. (Miller) Helmuth. He married Fannie Herschberger, they lived in for Matrimony 63 years, 11 months, 3 days.
He leaves to mourn his departure: wife, Fannie Helmuth, 13 children, Allan Helmuth and his wife Nettie of Bloomfield, IA, Vernon Helmuth and his wife Miriam of Fulton, SD, Ruth Mast and her husband Richard of Bloomfield, IA, Kenneth Helmuth and his wife Steffy of Springdale, WA, Linda Yoder and her husband William of Bloomfield, IA, Naomi Yoder and her husband Ernest of Bloomfield, IA, Esther Schlabach and her husband Kenneth of Ava, IL, Ervin Helmuth and his wife Dorcas of Statesville, NC, Dorothy Schlabach and her husband Merle of Ava, IL, Daniel Helmuth and his wife Katie Ann of Cleveland, NC, Paul Helmuth and his wife Ruth Ann of Arcola, IL, David Helmuth of Rushville, IL and Mary Helmuth of Statesville, NC, 101 grandchildren, one step grandchild, 182 great grandchildren, one brother, Leve Helmuth and his wife Eunice, and two sisters, Viola Jess and her husband John and Emma Corona and her husband Roy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother, two daughters-in-law and two grandchildren.
Orie loved life and as such lived a full life. He loved all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Helmuth, William Jay
June 30, 1937 - December 29, 2023
William Jay Helmuth died on December 29, 2023 with his family by his side. He was born on June 30, 1937 in Louisville, Ohio to Elsie (Sommers) & Alvin. He grew up on a farm, learning a hard work ethic along with a joy of playing ball and games with his siblings. Bill was a special brother & uncle that brought smiles and laughter to the family. A part of Bill’s amazing legacy was his gift of asking questions and expressing care. He did not always get it right and had to learn new ways of thinking and accepting, but he genuinely cared about people.
At an early age Bill also learned the value of serving others and spent time in voluntary service at Boys Village in Smithville, OH and Fort Wayne Children’s Home, and together with Corrine in Alberta, Canada. His training as a teacher (B.A. Malone College and M.A. St. Louis University), served him well as an elementary teacher, special education teacher, and principal. He worked at Lake Center School, Edgewood Children’s Home, and Central Christian School.
For 62 years Bill and Corrine have walked together, starting their dating journey at a hymn sing, where Corrine was impressed with Bill’s beautiful bass voice. Over the years they have loved singing side by side each Sunday morning at Sonnenberg Mennonite Church, where Bill’s commitment to the church community has been evident through activities such as teaching Sunday School.
While Bill held many titles in life, from principal to farmer, teacher to “fix it thrift store worker", his favorite role was being a father, grandfather, mentor. He loved nothing more than spending time with his adult children and grandchildren which often included walking the trails behind sister-in-law Virgenes house and eating meals at the campfire. He was always eager for the opportunity to engage in grandchildren’s lives and activities. Bill had many friends who became like family and loved spending the past 22 years volunteering at MCC Connections Thrift Store. He named many times that his cancer treatment was being with his friends at MCC.
Bill and Corrine’s four children are Ed (Julie) Helmuth of Colorado, Karen (Benny) Wise of North Carolina, Jan Kauffman of Indiana, Kandace (Jerry) Helmuth of Pennsylvania, and numerous grand and great grandchildren.
Bill’s siblings are Barb Witmer, Jim (Rich) Helmuth , and Carol Helmuth. He was preceded in death by brothers David Helmuth, Dale Helmuth and brother-in-law Bob Witmer.

Amy W. Herr, 99, of Ephrata, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at Lincoln Christian Home.
Amy was born in Martindale and was the daughter of the late Rudolph H. & Susanna H. (Wenger) Herr.
Amy and her sister, Louise lived in the Martindale area all their lives until they moved to the Lincoln Christian Home 12 years ago. Amy worked for Spring Glen Fresh Foods for 42 years. She was a member of Martindale Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference.
Surviving besides her older sister, Louise W. Herr are 7 nieces and nephews, Edwin Herr of Gorin, MO; John (Carolyn) Herr of New Holland; Eli (Mabel) Herr of Ephrata; Alma Oberholtzer of Owen, WI; Amy Louise (Jerry) Martin of Guys Mills; Melvin (Gloria) Herr of Richland and June (Rodney) Sensenig of Liberty; as well as 39 great nieces & nephews; 111 great great nieces & nephews; 12 step great nieces & nephews; 79 step great great nieces & nephews; 10 step great great great nieces & nephews.
Besides her parents, Amy was preceded in death by her brother Eli & his wife Fannie (Weaver) Herr; 1 niece-in-law; 1 nephew-in-law; 1 great niece; 1 great great niece; 1 great great nephew; 1 step great niece-in-law and 5 step great great nieces & nephews.

Herr, Jean E.
November 19, 1925 - March 30, 2023
Jean E. Herr, 97, of Quarryville, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 30, 2023. Born in East Drumore Twp. was a daughter of the late Jacob H. and Barbara (Grimsey) Herr.
Jean was a 1944 graduate of Quarryville High School and went on to work for Jerome H. Rhoads, Inc. for over 32 years. After retirement, she stayed active in the community by volunteering with Solanco Meals on Wheels and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. She was long-time member of New Providence Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years.
Jean in survived by several nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Veryl R. Herr, J. Henry Herr, Helen M. Herr; and a sister-in-law, Linda Herr.
A Memorial Service will take place at the New Providence Mennonite Church, 121 Main St., New Providence, PA on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. Traditional interment will be private in the adjoining cemetery. Herr, Mary Elizabeth Hershey
February 5, 1934 - September 26, 2023
Mary Elizabeth Herr (Hershey), 89, of Lancaster, PA, entered her eternal rest on September 26, 2023, following a recent illness.
Mary was born on February 5, 1934, in Lancaster, PA, attended Lancaster Mennonite School, and was married on September 3, 1966. Following a month-long honeymoon tour of U.S. national parks, the couple spent the first year of marriage working with Fox Street Mennonite Church in Bronx, NY.
They returned to Lancaster, PA, where they raised three daughters and were active members of Sunnyside Mennonite Church. A devoted mother and grandmother, Mary was a homemaker and avid gardener who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was thrilled to recently become a great-grandmother.
Mary is survived by her husband, James, daughters Suzanne (Jim) Weischedel of Lancaster, PA, Carolyn (Jeff) Strong of Fairfax, VA, and Amy (Pete) Lamberts of Cranford, NJ; grandchildren Joel (Madison), Bryan and Eric Weischedel, Evan and Seth Strong, and Jonah and Claudia Lamberts; and great-granddaughter Evelyn Jane Weischedel; as well as seven nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held at Sunnyside Mennonite Church, 337 Circle Ave., Lancaster, PA, on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., preceded by a visitation at 10:00 a.m.
Herr, Mary Jean Heistand
June 26, 1930 - November 29, 2023
Mary Jean Herr, 93, formerly of Truce, PA, completed her time on earth on Nov. 29, 2023 at Landis Homes where she was a resident for over 9 years. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Stella (Stern) Heistand and wife of Ira C. Herr, Jr.
After graduating from Lancaster Mennonite School, Mary Jean married and raised her family of five children while working part-time at John E. Landis Company. Later she worked at Willow Valley in the kitchen. She was a devoted mother who read stories and played games with her children. She was a member of Mechanic Grove Mennonite Church and later Rawlinsville Mennonite Church.
Besides her husband, Mary Jean is survived by 4 children: Rachel H. (Mervin) Frey of Greencastle, PA, Ira C. (Cindy) Herr III, of Lancaster, Edward Herr and Nevin Herr both of Bellevue, ID, 9 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death was a daughter Rhoda Martin, 1 grandchild, and her siblings.
Funeral service will be at Rawlinsville Mennonite Church, 848 Susquehannock Drive, Holtwood on Tuesday, December 5 at 10 a.m. with a viewing from 9 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

August 5, 1924 - August 28, 2023
Paul W. Herr, D.O., of East Petersburg, PA, passed away at home August 28th, 2023. He was born in Lancaster, PA, on August 5th, 1924. He was the son of H. Elvin and M. Elizabeth (Witmer) Herr. He celebrated 64 years of marriage with his late wife, Lois (Showalter) Herr.
He is survived by his children: John [wife, Kathleen (Drybred) Herr], Michael [wife, Donita (Schertz) Herr], Marianne [husband, Roger Herr-Paul], Stephen [wife, Kipley (Yosway) Herr], and Jean [husband, George Herr-Riser]; as well as 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his sister Susan Burkholder of Lancaster, PA and Ellen Rose Longacre of Bally, PA, and predeceased by his sister Lois Stoll.
Paul was a graduate of West Lampeter High School and Goshen College where he received a BA in Chemistry. He was a 1952 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He practiced Family Medicine in Quarryville, PA for about 30 years, where he delivered 2500 babies (including home deliveries), saw 16,000 patients (working 1416 hour days). He opened a satellite clinic of Planned Parenthood, was an active member of Menno Housing and the Community Action Program of Lancaster and served as a coroner. He served as president of the staff of the Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital, as well as president and secretary of the Lancaster County Osteopathic Society. He was instrumental in establishing Family Practice as an "Osteopathic specialty" in the 1970's in Pennsylvania. In 1985 he moved with his wife to Lewisburg, WV, to fulfill several roles at the WV School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM). He was Acting Dean, administered Family Practice Residencies, taught students in the Family Practice department, and again served as coroner. In 2001 he retired and in 2003 moved back to the greater Lancaster area to be close to family and friends. He never stopped being of service to his community. He championed the LGBTQIA community. An avid ham radio buff, he contributed to the development of improved Emergency Medical Communications in the surrounding area hospital systems. He also loved trains, both large and small, leaving behind a rich library of train slides and a beautiful train layout that he constructed. A life-long Mennonite, he also embraced the Presbyterian Church while in WV and the Unitarian Universalist Church while living with his daughter and family. He never stopped reading, sharing books and discussion with friends, family, and colleagues. He has been honored several times with the following:
1) ACOFP (American College of Family Physicians) Physician of the Year 2002.
2) The S. Lawrence Koplovitz, D.O. Dedicated & Meritorious Award. This is the highest award the POFPS (Pennsylvania Osteopathic Family Practice Society) can bestow. The POFPS is entering its 64th year of existence, thanks to Dr. Herr, and he was the 8th ever recipient. It was awarded at the POFPS 60th Anniversary celebration in 2019.

Hershberger, Henry D.

Henry D. "Hank" Hershberger, 100, of 3864 Township Road 162, Sugarcreek, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 after a period of declining health. He was born on July 24, 1923, to the late Dan J. and Katieann (Beachy) Hershberger. He married M. Ruth Slotemaker on October 16, 1959. Ruth survives him.
Hank was a member of The Branch Church (Baltic), formerly Farmerstown Mennonite Church and Countryside Chapel. He was a Bible translator with Wycliffe Bible Translators, and was involved in two translation projects: the New Testament in the Guugu Yalandji (or Kuku-Yalanji) language of Queensland, Australia, and the Pennsylvania Deitsh Bible. Besides helping translate, he analyzed the sound system of the languages and developed materials to help speakers learn to read. It gave him joy to train and work alongside local speakers of the languages. His favorite past-times were fishing and hunting -- and recalling adventures related to them -- and reading.
He will be missed by his children, Danny (Tabby) Hershberger of Pensacola, FL; Carol (John) Berthelette of Walnut Creek; and Steve Hershberger, of Berlin; 4 grandchildren, Taylor (Sarah), Trent (Rachel), Tori (Jesse), and Tucker; and 3 great-grandchildren, Reece, Roman, and Ryder.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Simon, Roy, Jonas, Dan and Emmanuel; his sister, Emma Kramer; and two infant sisters, Mattie and Ada.
Visitation will be at The Branch Church on Sunday, December 17, 2023 between 2-4 PM. Funeral services will be held at The Branch Church on Monday, December 18, 2023 at 10 AM. Rozella “Rosie” J. Hershberger, 81, of Goshen, passed away Friday, December 15, 2023, at Greencroft Healthcare.
She was born July 18, 1942 in Goshen to Jency and Lovina (Garber) Hershberger.
She is survived by five siblings, Richard (Kathie) Hershbergerof Elkhart, Linda (Richard) Wogoman of Granger, Thelma (Richard) Ramer of Goshen, Arthur (Jane) Hershberger of Dillwyn, Virginia and Betty (Dave) Schmid of Elkhart; and brother-in-law, Melvin Stutzman of Goshen.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Stutzman and brother, Terry Hershberger.
A longtime Goshen resident, Rosie worked in the research department at Miles Laboratory for 21 years. She also worked at Oaklawn for seven years.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 17, 2023, from 2 to 4 p.m. and Monday from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in Yellow Creek Cemetery, Goshen.

Daniel L. Hertzler, 97, Scottdale, longtime editor of Mennonite publications, died June 14 [2023] in Scottdale.
He was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Elverson, PA, to Melvin and Susan (Shenk) Hertzler.
He married Mary Yoder, daughter of Eugene and Esther (Miller) Yoder, in Aurora, Ohio, on July 12, 1952. She preceded him in death in November 2017.
Survivors include four sons, Dennis, Monesson, PA; Ron (Laurel), Telford, PA; Gerry (Mary), Goshen, IN.; and Dan Mark (Christie), Lancaster, PA; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are a brother, Truman Hertzler, Elverson, PA, and a sister, Katherine Hallman, Kansas City, MO.
A sister, Martha preceded him in death in 2021.
He earned multiple educational degrees including a doctor of philosophy, religious education, from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966.
Dan had a 38-year career with the Mennonite Publishing House from 1952 to 1990. His work involved serving as editor of a variety of Christian education publications as well as editing Christian Living, Builder and 17 years as Gospel Herald editor. He retired Oct. 19, 1990.
Viewing is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Scottdale Mennonite Church, where Dan was a member.
The funeral service is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Burial will be in Alte Menist Mennonite (Pennsville) Cemetery.

Hess, Anna Mae
February 27, 1945 - November 23, 2023
Anna Mae Hess, 78, of Mountville, passed on to her heavenly home on Thursday, November 23, 2023, at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Pequea, daughter of the late Christ M. and Edna Harnish Hess.
Anna Mae worked as an LPN at St. Joseph's Hospital for three years, then moved to Washington DC, where she worked at Washington Hospital Center. She spent her evenings doing volunteer work for Peabody Street Mennonite Church, doing activities with children and youth in the community. Later, she volunteered and worked with Capital Christian Fellowship. She retired in 2007 and served in Guatemala under EMM short term.
Anna Mae loved animals and enjoyed walks with her dogs and meeting neighbors. In her love for the Lord, she wanted to welcome new neighbors and friends into her church. She had a real love for people.
She moved back to PA in 2017 and lived with her sister, Joy and brother-in-law, Phil Shertzer. She then became a member of Mountville Mennonite Church. Anna Mae moved to Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in July of 2022.
She is survived by her siblings: Christ (Elaine) Hess; Pauline (Melvin) Reitz; Elvin (Sue) Hess; Raymond (Faye) Hess; Edna (Kevin) Kilheffer; Richard (Lynda) Hess; Joyce (Phil) Shertzer and Park (Stacy) Hess. Hess, Beatrice Hershberger
March 12, 1925 - March 22, 2023
Beatrice Hershberger Hess, age 98, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 22, 2023. Born March 12, 1925 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Beatrice was the daughter of Abram and Lessie (Wenger) Hershberger.
She is survived by one son; J. Richard (Dick), husband of Mary (Buckwalter) Hess, of Homestead, Florida, and one daughter; Liz Hess of Lancaster. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Bishop James R. Hess, two sons; Daniel E., late husband of Beverly (Strickler) Hess and Gerald D., late husband of Linda (Dahl) Hess, and one granddaughter, Jody Hess.
Beatrice's father was a teacher at Eastern Mennonite Seminary (now Eastern Mennonite University) in Harrisonburg, VA, and her mother ran a bakery. One of Beatrice's first memories was standing on a chair at the counter as a very young girl, kneading dough for her mother.
At the age of 17, Beatrice's father passed away unexpectedly, and she was left to help her mother not only look after the three younger children, but also run the bakery. After graduating from Eastern Mennonite High School, she took a two-year business course at James Madison University and was promptly hired to work in the administrative office at Eastern Mennonite College (now EMU). There she met her future husband, James R. Hess, of Lancaster, PA who was a seminary student.
During the years before marriage, Beatrice was active in several local mission groups in Virginia, helping rural families in need and assisting in programs at mission churches around the area.
James and Beatrice were engaged during James' senior year of seminary and were then recruited by Eastern Mennonite Missions (Lancaster, PA) to consider going to Honduras, Central America, to help establish the first Mennonite church there. James was not certain they should accept the mission position, wondering if it would be better that he use his degree to work in the U.S, providing for his new wife and possible, future family. But it was Beatrice's insistence that they carefully pray about and consider accepting the call as missionaries.
They married in July 1950 right after James' graduation. One and a half years later, they set off by ship (a banana boat) with their new, 3-month-old baby in tow, as pioneer missionaries to Honduras where they would serve for the next 19 years. Three more children followed before they returned to the U.S. in 1970.
When they returned to Lancaster, James worked for several years at Victor Weaver's (now Tyson Foods) in New Holland, and Beatrice worked in the business office of Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society before James was called to the pastorate at East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church in Lancaster City. There, Beatrice served as a very active and faithful pastor's wife, lending help as a counselor alongside her husband, helping to lead Bible Studies and prayer groups, and founding MOM's (Morning Out for Mothers) which was a weekday outreach to the surrounding community for women of all ages and backgrounds. In addition to her full-time role as a pastor's wife, she also hosted many, many meals in her home for the parishioners. Her family thought it quite strange if they sat down to a Sunday dinner and no one but the family was present. Nearly every Sunday after church, she had a bountiful table spread for many guests to join her family around the table. Her daughter recalls how waking up on Sunday mornings before the family left for church at 8:30, Beatrice already had the kitchen smelling of fresh bread and pies.
She also worked in the office at Locust Grove Mennonite School for 23 years where she was a very valued and trusted bookkeeper.
In the early 1980s James was ordained Bishop of the Lancaster City district of 10 Mennonite churches, and Beatrice transitioned to a faithful bishop's wife. Her meal hosting never ceased and she continued to work at Locust Grove, all while serving faithfully in various church capacities as a bishop's wife. Later they became members of Mellinger Mennonite Church, Lancaster.
She was never idle. Her famous quote about television was, "It is a thief of time!".
When she did take a moment to sit down and relax, her most cherished pastime was sewing. Even though she grew up sewing, she would later indulge in specialized sewing courses and learn how to make suits and finely tailored clothing---all which she did as a pastime rather than out of necessity. She used to say that if the family wanted to give her a day of vacation, they should lock her in her sewing room and not disturb her.
In their retirement, both James and Beatrice enjoyed being tour guides at Lancaster Mennonite Information Center during the summers, and wintering at a small house they built in Florida. They enjoyed ten years of carefree retirement before everything came to an abrupt halt in 2006 when she suffered a major stroke and nearly died at age 81. But as was typical of her tenacity and determination in life, she pulled through and lived a happy and healthy, though limited lifestyle, for years after her stroke, enjoying her grandchildren and the arrival of her great-grand grandchildren.
Though she was busy in life, her husband and children never felt like other things were above them. She was always attentive to, and there for her family, keeping an immaculate house and hot, homemade meals on the table three times a day. Her family always treasured the authentic, Honduran dishes she would make for them, which she had learned to make like a true native of Central America during her time there. Together with James, they provided a Godly, idyllic, loving, and stable home, of which her descendants now benefit.
She leaves a legacy and stellar example of utmost devotion to God, her husband, her family, and every place she worked and served, in that order.
A memorial service will take place on Monday, June 5th at 11 a.m. at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, with a time to visit the family following the service during a luncheon. Interment will take place prior to the service at the convenience of the family in the Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery.
Hibshman, Dawn Marie
September 5, 1971 - August 4, 2023
Dawn Marie Hibshman, 51, of Lititz. went to meet her Lord and Savior on August 4, 2023 at her home. Surviving family are her father, Victor Hibshman and stepmother Vera Rose Rohrer Hibshman; two sisters, Diane Auker wife of Lavern, Darla Leid wife of Lester; 3 nephews and 3 nieces. Gone on before are her mother Ruth Brendle Hibshman and infant brother Duane.
Dawn was a very dedicated employee of Friendship Community at St. Stephens group home in New Holland for 27 years. She worked long hours covering many empty shifts after doing her regular hours. She also worked part time at Clay Bookstore for 22 years. She was a member of New Haven Mennonite Church in Lititz. Her hobbies included reading, music and trying new recipes.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. at the New Haven Mennonite Church, 230 Crest Road, Lititz, PA. Interment in the adjoining church cemetery. Ivan L. High, 82 years, 8 days, of Gorin, Missouri passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 10, 2023, at his home.
Ivan was born on April 2, 1941, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the son of Norman E. and Martha L. Lehman High.
On May 25, 1963, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he married Mary O. Martin and she preceded him in death on October 4, 1976.
On April 2, 1977 Ivan married Erma O. Martin and she survives of the home.
He was a member of the Northview Mennonite Church, north of Arbela, Missouri.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Erma High of Gorin, Missouri; children from his first union, Jane (Rufus) Musser of Milton, Iowa, Jerry (Susan) High of Arbela, Missouri, Lois (Melvin) Rissler of California, Missouri, Lamar (Melody) High of Downing, Missouri, Rhoda (Aaron) Martin of Pulaski, Iowa, Randy (Regina) High of Downing, Missouri, and Clair (Katrina) High of Gorin, Missouri; children from his second union, Carolyn High and Kevin High both of Memphis, Missouri; a brother, Paul (Elaine) High of Ephrata, Pennsylvania; four sisters, Irene (Lawrence) Martin of East Earl, Pennsylvania, Anna Mary (Wilmer) Horning, and Lucille (Leon) Good all of Port Byron, New York, and Edna (Leon) Horning of Memphis, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Edna Mae High of Newmanstown, Pennsylvania, and Alice High of Ephrata, Pennsylvania; forty-nine grandchildren; sixty-five great grandchildren.

J. Clair High, 90, of Stevens, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at his home.
He was born in Ephrata to the late Levi and Katie (Good) High and was the husband of the late Shirley Ann (Weaver) High.
Clair was a lifetime member of Blainsport Mennonite Church. He was involved with the egg industry for 76 years. He was still buying, selling, and hand delivering eggs several days a week. He enjoyed softball, baseball, golf, bowling, and playing cards. Family was very important to him.
He is survived by five sons, Gary L., husband of Cecelia (Leed) High of Elizabethtown, Jay L., husband of Star (Moser) High of Port St. Lucie, FL, Kevin L., husband of Holly (Dillman) High of Denver, Curtis L., husband of Joan (Higgins) High of Stevens, Darrell L., husband of Cindy (Werner) High of Cornwall; a daughter-in-law, Connie (Becker) High of Reinholds; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Fred, husband of Candy High of Denver, Dale High of Gordonville and June Horst of Clay.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three children, Dennis L. High, Lori Sue High, Clair L. High; 3 siblings, Leon High, Donnie High and Kathy Good.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Blainsport Mennonite Church, 85 S. Blainsport Road, Reinholds. Hilty, Marvin S.
December 18, 1929 - July 18, 2023
Marvin S. Hilty, age 93, of Columbus, formerly of Orrville and Belle Center, died Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at his home in Columbus.
Marvin was born on December 18, 1929, in Massillon, to the late Noah and Elizabeth (Raber) Hilty, attended Fountain Nook School (Township #7) and graduated from Sterling High School in 1948. He attended Eastern Mennonite College and Kent State University, ultimately graduating from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1966. He married Mary L. Richard on June 7, 1951, at Crown Hill Mennonite Church in Rittman. Mary died on July 9, 2018.
He worked with his parents on the family farm, interned with Auble Funeral Home in Orrville, and worked with Gillman Funeral Home in Rittman as well as Surge Services. He worked as a Funeral Director and Embalmer, purchasing Swope Funeral Home, Belle Center, in 1968, providing funeral and ambulance services, and set up an additional funeral home in Rushsylvania in 1970. He sold the funeral homes in 1982 to Mr. Rose, who eventually sold to Eichholtz Funeral home in 1995. He continued to work for Eichholtz from 1995 until his retirement in 2016, as well as providing vacation coverage for many funeral directors in Ohio.
Marvin was a member of Crown Hill Mennonite Church in Rittman and attended the Belle Center United Presbyterian Church as well as the Worthington Presbyterian Church. He was a former member of the Ohio and National Funeral Directors Associations, Ohio Embalmers Association, F&AM Masonic Lodge #209 in Bellefontaine, Rushsylvania Lions Club, Belle Center Kiwanis and was a 30 year member of the Belle Center Fire Department.
Surviving are two daughters, Carol M. (Donald) Ebersole of Goshen, IN and Cheryl M. Hilty of Columbus; three sons, Dale M. Hilty of Bellefontaine, Duane M. Hilty of Columbus, and Donald M. Hilty of Sacramento, CA; five grandchildren, Sarah Hilty of Atlanta, GA, Meredith Ebersole of Portland, OR, Matthew (Ariel Jewer) Ebersole of Goshen, IN, Armoni Hilty of Sacramento, CA, and Lilly Hilty of Menlo Park, CA.
In addition to his parents, and wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin L. Hilty.

Hochstetler, Catherine Miller

Catherine Hochstetler, age 93, of Nappanee, died at 2:15 am, Sunday, April 9, 2023 at Signature Healthcare, Bremen. She was born April 13, 1929 in Kosciusko County to Nathanial and Betty (Thomas) Miller. She lived her lifetime in this area. On March 16, 1950, she married Menno J. Hochstetler in Nappanee. He preceded her in death April 27, 2017.
Mrs. Hochstetler was a homemaker and did housecleaning and quilting. She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids and enjoyed cooking and baking.

Dorothy Hochstetler, age 83 of Hope Springs Manor, Goshen, IN, formerly of Milford, IN, died at 10:45 am on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at The Laurels of Goshen. Dorothy was born on June 24, 1940 in Mendon, MI to Phineas D. and Susan (Frey) Hochstetler. She lived most of her life in the Nappanee area and was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Dorothy worked for many years at Family Fare and then Martin’s Supermarket in Nappanee.
Surviving are 2 brothers: Melvin (Pauline) Hochstetler of Centerville, MI and Leroy (Pauline) Hochstetler of Three Rivers, MI; 1 sister, Rosemary (Paul) Mullet of Leesburg, IN; 13 nieces and nephews; 25 great nieces and nephews; and 6 great great nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and a stillborn niece.
Visitation will be held after 2 pm on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at the Nelson Slabaugh residence (3962 W 1350 N, Milford, IN 46542). A funeral service will be held at 9:30 am on Sunday, July 2, 2023, also at the Nelson Slabaugh residence. Home ministries of the Old Order Amish Church will officiate and burial will take place in Weldy Cemetery, Nappanee, IN. Helen Hochstetler, 81, of Topeka, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at 7:17 pm, on Monday, December 25, 2023, at her residence. She was born on March 30, 1942, in LaGrange to Jonas J. and Edna (Troyer) Weaver. On May 5, 1964, in LaGrange, she married Raymond Hochstetler, he passed away on June 23, 2021.
Surviving are six daughters, Karen (Peter) Kaufman of Topeka, Penny (Howard) Mast of Adamsville, TN, Velda Slabaugh of LaGrange, Anna (Jon) Yoder of Goshen, Diane Lehman of Goshen, and Doris Kaufman of Goshen; three sons, Harry (Susan) Hochstetler of Goshen, Jay Dee (Rosetta) Hochstetler of Sarasota, FL, and Dale (Carolyn) Hochstetler of Middlebury; 33 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, and 1 step great-great-grandchild; sister, Lydia Borntrager of Goshen; two brothers, Harry (Mary) Weaver of Topeka and Harley (Ella) Weaver of Pardeesville, WI.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Anna Jacobs, Elsie Miller, Ella Yoder, Esther Miller, Edna Bontrager, and Susie Wengerd; brother, Calvin Weaver; 3 grandchildren.
Helen was a homemaker and a member of the Fairhaven Mennonite Church. She enjoyed doing crafts, quilting, crocheting, sewing, and putting puzzles together. She loved watching birds and working in her garden. Helen and her husband enjoyed spending the winter in Florida. Her greatest joy was being in the presence of her children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Friday, December 29, at Fairhaven Mennonite Church, Goshen. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 30, also at the church. Services will be conducted by Pastor Ray Stutzman and the Fairhaven Mennonite Church Ministry Team. Luka Thomas Hochstetler, infant son of Lyndon Dale and Kaitlyn Rose (Chupp) Hochstetler of Topeka (district: 29-2), was born on Monday, May 8 [2023] at 11:00 pm and passed away at 12:30 am, on Tuesday, May 9, [2023] at New Eden Care Center, Topeka.
Surviving are his parents; sister, Natalie Claire Hochstetler; grandparents, Freeman and Rosemary (Yoder) Hochstetler of Wolcottville, Duane Lynn and Marlene (Troyer) Chupp of Shipshewana.
Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 2:30 pm on Wednesday May 10, at the Cletus Hostetler residence, 7815 W 600 S, Topeka. Funeral services will follow starting at 2:30 pm. Services will be conducted by Bishop Wayne Miller and the home ministers of the Old Order Amish Church. Burial will be in East Barren Cemetery, Shipshewana. Mary E. Hochstetler, 84 years, 3 months, and 20 days, passed away at 7:40 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2023 at her residence. She was born April 8, 1939 in Chouteau, OK to Ray C. and Malinda P. (Borntrager) Chupp. On October 6, 1960 she married Ernest R. Hochstetler in Nappanee. Mary has lived in the Nappanee area for 80 years. She was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
Surviving is her husband, Ernest Hochstetler, Nappanee; 2 sons, Ray (Leona Miller) Hochstetler, Nappanee and Michael (Linda Mast) Hochstetler, Nappanee; 7 daughters, Lorraine (Mark) Stutzman, Nappanee, Sharon (Allen) Borkholder, Bremen, Linda (Frederick) Miller, Bremen, Diana (Eddie) Borkholder, Bremen, Vonda (Daryl) Yoder, Bremen, Regina (Larry) Chupp, Bremen, Amy (Virgil) Yoder, Nappanee; daughter-in-law, Etta (Schwartz) Hochstetler, Nappanee; 54 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence (Sarah Jean Eash) Chupp, Bremen; and a brother-in-law, Jonas Hochstetler, Bremen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step mother, Alma (Hochstetler) Chupp; son, Steve Hochstetler; and a sister, Amanda (Chupp) Hochstetler.

Hochstetler, Milan Moses
May 23, 1929 - January 1, 2023
Milan Moses Hochstetler, 93, went to be with the Lord, January 1, 2023 at his home, surrounded by family. He was born in Holmes County, Ohio on May 23, 1929, the youngest son of the late Emery J. and Netti W. Hochstetler. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha Kramer Hochstetler. The Hochstetler family moved from Ohio to the Chesapeake, VA area when Milan was six years old.
Living across the road from a dairy farm sparked his lifelong interest in all aspects of farming. He felt very “rich” when the farmer gave him a few cents for volunteering to help with the milking on that farm! A number of years later, Milan worked full time for Yoder Dairy, delivering milk to residences. Milan was never called up for service during WW2, but afterward at age 17 he and his friend Stanley Warfel served as seagoing “cowboys”, tending horses being taken on a ship to Poland to help with the rebuilding of the country after the war.
Milan was always very inventive and creative, which was evident throughout his life, beginning with the conversion of a Norfolk city bus into a home for his bride, Martha Kramer. They were married January 1, 1950 and lived in the 7 ½ x 21 foot bus for five years. The family outgrew the bus and moved into a new brick home that Milan built with the help of family and neighbors.
The family moved from Chesapeake to Amelia, and then to Cumberland, VA. During those years, Milan held various jobs -- carpentry, welding, and farming, including raising draft horses, his special interest. He was part owner in Amelia Truss, as well as starting Buggy Top, building small storage barns. Milan was a volunteer EMT with the Cumberland Rescue Squad for 25 years. He always enjoyed helping people and found great satisfaction in serving his community, making many friends along the way.
In his retirement, Milan especially enjoyed creating and building in his well-stocked shop, including small projects, like the wooden bowls he gave each of his children, the grandchildren and other friends. And he thoroughly relished the challenge of making something out of “nothing”, like the elevator he created from an old forklift, or his “donkey”, made from an old lawn mower to ride around at the local auctions.
Milan and Martha both made early commitments to the Lord Jesus, and their faith was a firm foundation for their marriage and family. They were long time members of the Mennonite Church, first at Chesapeake and then Amelia. In later years, they were members of Ebenezer Mennonite Church at South Boston, VA.
Milan is survived by Dana Fern (Marvin) Kropf, Vernon (Faith) Hochstetler; Bill (Brenda) Hochstetler; Betsy (Mark) Shult; Carol (Gary) Schrock; 22 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. Memorial Contributions may be made to Christian Aid Ministries in Ohio at www.christianaidministries.org.

Hochstetler, Miriam
November 6, 1934 - March 5, 2023
Miriam Hochstetler, age 88 of Nappanee, died at 8:35 am on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at her residence. On November 6, 1934, Miriam was born as the fourth child to William and Mary (Maust) Hochstetler in Nappanee, Indiana.
Deceased family members are her parents and three brothers: Eugene Lewis Hochstetler, Dean LaMar Hochstetler and Alan Ray Hochstetler. Surviving family member is one sister, Mary Ellen (Hochstetler) Kaufman.
Miriam graduated from Goshen College with a B.A. in Elementary Education, Ball state University with a M.A. in Elementary Education and received an Ed. D. in Elementary Education with cognates in reading and special education. She received an outstanding citation of her doctoral Dissertation.
She was a much-loved second grade teacher for 13 years altogether in Indiana at Bremen Public Schools, Griffith Public Schools, and South Central Elementary, all in Indiana. She also taught third and fourth grade students at Boca Raton Elementary School, Boca Raton, Florida. She engaged in private tutoring most of her life and was a substitute teacher in several local public schools.
Other teaching public positions included: a reading resource person in K-8 teachers at Duneland School Corporation, Chesterton, Indiana; reading coordinator K-high school and Title 1 aides at Manchester Community Schools, North Manchester, Indiana; curriculum coordinator and supervisor at Learning Center in Ft. Wayne, Indiana; a small group of Laotian students learning English (ESL) program) for WaNee School Corporation, Nappanee, Indiana; taught students in the government Chapter 1 program grades 1-6 at LaVille Elementary School, Lakeville, Indiana; reading coordinator at North Miami School Corporation, Denver, Indiana; workshops for government sponsored Chapter 1 parents and teachers; workshops for other classroom teachers and reading councils; reading skills demonstrations for PTA meetings; and chairman of Language Arts Division of Teachers’ Institute in South Bend, Indiana.
Additional full and part time college teaching positions included undergraduates and graduates; Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana; IUSB (Indiana University at South Bend), Indiana; Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana; Bluffton University, Bluffton, Ohio; Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana; and Berkshire Christian College, Lenox, Massachusetts.
Church positions and activities: planned, implemented, and conducted Christian Nurture Skillshops for Sunday School teachers, pastors, and administrators of Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Churches; provided training workshops for Sunday School and Bible School teachers in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Virginia; summer voluntary service in Buckeye, Arizona, teaching children, song leader, home visitations, and social activities; participated in a witness crusade to Ecuador, South America, under the auspices of Men for Missions International, Greenwood, Indiana; transposed music for her ladies’ quartet; initiated and directed a group of eleven handchimes players; initiated and directed a four-part harmony ladies’ chorus at North Main Mennonite Church, Nappanee, Indiana; played the organ for several different churches and for funeral/memorial services at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, Indiana.
A few nonfictional stories were published in Story Friends, a weekly Mennonite publication; wrote simple scientific articles, arts and crafts ideas, and recipes for Nature Friend, a children’s magazine; and a book about her family and her life entitled Steps Along My Path (1999). A second book, A Glimpse of How it Used to Be (Aug. 2021) was followed by Purring Perfectly (Dec. 2021). Her fourth book, Reminiscence of a Teacher’s Students: True Stories of Past Teaching Experiences, was published in mid - 2022. She edited a book about Ervin Schwartz’s life history.
Hobbies included: reading, playing the organ, working outside, directing handchimes, typing, making an assortment of cards from wallpaper books and other patterns necessitating a stylus and lightbox; embroidering and quilting; putting together jigsaw puzzles; making many family scrapbooks with photos and written facts about their lives; and traveling to Europe, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and many U.S. states.
Public visitation with family and friends will be from 2-4 pm on Friday, March 10 at Thompson-Lengacher and Yoder Funeral Home (950 N. Main St. in Nappanee, IN). A private family graveside service at the South Union Cemetery will be conducted by Miriam’s nephew Chaplain Clair Hochstetler. A public memorial service will be held afterward at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 11 at the First Mennonite Church (900 W. Market St., Nappanee, IN), involving several of Miriam’s former students.
Memorial contributions can be made to FOCHUS Academy (fochus.org) which equips the Montagnard people in both Vietnam and in the USA to learn, serve, and lead.

September 24, 1933 - September 22, 2023
Perry D. Hochstetler, 89, of Ligonier (district: 21), died at 2:35 pm, on Friday, September 22, [2023] at his residence. He was born on September 24, 1933, in Bremen, to Daniel and Susie (Borkholder) Hochstetler. On December 16, 1954, in Nappanee, he married Fannie Gingerich, Fannie died December 23, 2021.
Surviving are three sons, Lamar (Esther) Hochstetler of Middlebury, Lyle (Ruth) Hochstetler of Ligonier, Ernest (Joanna) Hochstetler of Shipshewana; daughter, Rosemary (Joe) Bontrager of Ligonier; 24 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 98 great grandchildren, one step great grandchild, one great-great granddaughter; three sisters, Elizabeth Slabaugh of Nappanee, Minerva Chupp of Nappanee, Lydia Ann Hochstetler of Pine Craft, FL; half-brother, Raymond (Rosemary) Hochstetler of Nottawa, MI; sister-in-law, Ruby Hochstetler of Bremen.
He was preceded in death by his wife; three sons, Alan, LeRoy, and a stillborn son; his parents; two stepmothers, Edith and Amanda Hochstetler; two brothers, Eli and John Hochstetler; sister, Sarah Hochstetler; three brothers-in-law, Tobias Slabaugh, William Chupp, Willis Hochstetler; sister-in-law, Orpha Hochstetler.
Perry was a farmer for most of his life and member of the Old Order Amish Church. He became ordained a minister in 1960, and a Bishop in 1982.
Visitation will be after 1:00 pm Saturday, September 23, and all-day Sunday, September 24, at the Joe Bontrager residence at 10926 N. 400 W. Ligonier. Funeral services will be at 9:30 am on Monday, September 25, at the Larry Bontrager residence at 10957 N. 400 W. Ligonier. Services will be conducted by Bishop Harvey Fry and the home ministers. Burial will be in Clearspring Cemetery, Topeka. Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury, is handling the arrangements.

Ruth Eileen Miller Hochstetler passed to her eternal home on September 1, 2023, she was 83 years old. She was born on January 25, 1940 to the late Roman D. and Margaret Miller in Norfolk, VA. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Carson T. Hochstetler.
She is survived by 3 children: Marcus Jay Hochstetler (Janice) of Murrieta, California, Steven Glen Hochstetler (Julie) of Prospect, VA, and Elaine Carol Hochstetler Shinsky (Jerry) of Ruckersville, VA, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Five siblings: Mary Lou Vrolijk of Harrisonburg, VA, Richard Miller (Rita) of Eldorado Springs, MO, Loretta Miller (Robert) of Greenwood, DE, James Miller (Annette) of Phoenix, AZ, and Roman Miller, Jr. (Carrie) of Auburn, KY; 2 sisters-in-law: Sarah Miller of Margarettsville, NC and Elsie Miller of Moyock, NC and many nieces and nephews who she dearly loved.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings Carolyn Lerner, Marion Miller, Daniel Miller, Kenneth Miller, Paul Dean Miller, and Ramon Miller.
Ruth was very active in her church life: leading singing, teaching Sunday School, hosting Bible studies, and serving in any other way she felt God leading. She spent time at Red Lake, Ontario, Canada with Northern Light Gospel Missions, taught school at Kempsville Mennonite School, and spent many years as a bookkeeper at Yoder Dairies in Virginia Beach, VA.
Ruth will be remembered for her faith, her love of birds, her love for family history, her
kindness, and her grandchildren, nieces and nephews remember how she always took an
interest in what was happening in their lives and in the latest technology. She was a true and loyal friend to many.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 6, 2023, from 6-8pm at Puckett Funeral Home, Farmville, VA. The funeral service will be Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 10am at Oak Hill Mennonite Church, Cumberland VA.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers who helped care for Ruth over the past 2 weeks as well as Hospice of Virginia. We felt your love and support.

Wilma E. Hochstetler, 76, of Shipshewana, (district: 41-4), died at 6:04 am on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, from complications of a stroke that occurred earlier that week. She was born on April 20, 1947 in LaGrange to Amos and Sarah (Shrock) Bontrager. On November 2, 1965, in Shipshewana, she married Casper J. Hochstetler, he survives.
Survivors in addition to her husband are four sons, Gerald (Ruth) Hochstetler of Sturgis, MI, Devon (Inez) Hochstetler of Middlebury, Lyle (Fannie Mae) Hochstetler, Joe (Amy) Hochstetler both of Shipshewana; three daughters, Cheryl (Dan) Hershberger, Brenda (Roy) Schlabach, Karen (Dale) Schlabach all of Shipshewana; 31 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two brothers, Orva (Elsie) Bontrager of Shipshewana, Elmer (Louise) Bontrager of Sarasota, FL; sister, Anna Sue (Menno, dec.) Lambright of Shipshewana.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Keith Allen Schlabach; a sister, Katie (Lee of Nappanee) Miller.
